All Auping box springs are made to order in Deventer. In our own workshop, we cut the fabric and hand-upholster the base, the mattress, and the headboard. The result is a one-of-a-kind piece, created for each customer, not for stock.

What exactly is a box spring and how does it differ from a normal bed?
A box spring is a layered sleep system that combines the base, mattress, and topper into a single upholstered unit. Unlike a conventional bed, where the mattress rests on a separate box spring, the Auping box spring is constructed as a continuous structure with a double layer of pocket springs: one in the base and another in the mattress. This combination offers a more progressive and balanced sleeping experience and also allows for extensive customization in terms of fabrics, colors, and finishes.
What should I consider when buying a box spring?
Before making a decision, it’s a good idea to decide on the size—single or double—the type of base—fixed or adjustable—the firmness level, and the style of your bedroom in terms of color and fabric. At Auping, you can customize every detail of your box spring and count on the support of our specialists throughout the process, so the final result matches your preferences.
What sizes are Auping box springs available in?
Auping box springs are available in the most common sizes: widths ranging from 80 to 200 cm and lengths of 200, 210, or 220 cm. The Original and Kiruna models are also available in a split version, consisting of two halves on casters that make cleaning and moving them around the bedroom easier.
We recommend choosing a length that is at least 20–30 cm longer than the height of the tallest person who will be sleeping on it.
Can the position of the box spring be adjusted?
Yes. Auping’s adjustable beds allow you to adjust the backrest, footrest, and headboard, with options for 1, 2, or 3 motors depending on the model. You can adjust each position using the wireless remote control and save up to 3 favorite positions. On double beds, each side can be adjusted independently.
Is a boxspring the same as an upholstered bed?
In practice, yes: cama tapizada and cama continental are the names Spain uses for what the industry calls a boxspring. What all three terms describe is a bed whose base is upholstered and forms a single unit with the mattress, rather than a mattress resting on a visible slatted base. What a boxspring is not is a canapé: a canapé includes storage, and Auping’s boxsprings don’t.
Which of the three Auping boxsprings should I choose?
It depends on what matters most in your decision. The Original Boxspring is the most popular in the range and offers the best balance of features, customization, and price, with 14 fabrics and 8 headboards. The Criade is the choice if you’re after visual character: its exposed steel frame and slender legs fit contemporary interiors. The Kiruna is the top-tier option, with natural materials like sheep’s wool or horsehair, a luxury upholstered mattress, and a topper included. All three share the same sizes, the adjustable option with up to 3 motors, and a 35-year warranty.
Does a boxspring need a separate base or mattress?
No. The boxspring already integrates the base and mattress, so there’s no need to add a base underneath or buy the mattress separately. That’s precisely what sets it apart from a conventional bed, where base, frame, and mattress are bought as separate pieces. In the Kiruna’s case, the topper is also included.
How much does an Auping boxspring cost?
Prices start at €3,894 for the Original Boxspring, €4,774 for the Criade, and €7,822 for the Kiruna, in a double size. The final price depends on the size, chosen fabric, headboard, and whether you opt for the fixed or adjustable version with 1, 2, or 3 motors.
Auping boxsprings and upholstered beds
Every boxspring is configured from scratch: model, fabric, headboard, firmness, and level of adjustability. Below are the decisions worth having clear before stepping into the showroom.
Double upholstered bed: two bases, two firmness levels
In a double size, an Auping upholstered bed isn’t one large base but two independent bases within the same upholstered unit. Each person chooses their own firmness and, in the adjustable version, adjusts their side without moving the other: one person can stay sitting up reading while the other is already asleep. Visually, the whole thing reads as a single bed, because the topper covers the central join and removes the seam.
How to choose the fabric and color of your boxspring
This is the decision that shapes the bedroom result the most, and the hardest to picture on paper. The Original and the Criade offer 14 fabrics and 10 frame colors; the Kiruna works with a selection of high-end fabrics. As a general rule, earthy tones and natural greens blend the bed into the room, while a deep blue or an exposed steel frame turn it into the room’s focal point. The fabrics are cut and upholstered by hand in Deventer, so seeing the physical swatch in-store is the only reliable way to decide.
A boxspring's height, and why you notice it when getting up
A boxspring sits higher than a bed with a base, and you notice that difference every morning: getting in and out takes less effort because your knees start from a more natural position. It’s one of the reasons this format has become widespread in hospitality, and why it works well for those with a sensitive back or who want more independence without giving up a designer bed.
Caring for the upholstery
A boxspring is cleaned and cared for — it isn’t flipped like a loose mattress. The upholstery is vacuumed with the fabric attachment, and stains are treated dry as soon as possible, without rubbing. The steel mesh base needs no maintenance, and the system’s overall ventilation does the job that other beds need active airing to achieve. Rotating the mattress periodically is still recommended.
35-year warranty on the mesh and frame
The steel mesh and frame are covered by a 35-year warranty against wire breakage, an unusually long term for the industry that reflects how the base is built: steel woven from wire coils, designed to last generations. A high-end boxspring bed starts at figures worth understanding. There’s no stock: production begins once the order comes in, and each piece is woven, cut, and upholstered by hand at the company’s own factory in Deventer. Add to that the 35-year structural warranty and a lifespan measured in decades, not years. Spread across the time the bed will actually spend in the bedroom, the math changes quite a bit compared with a purchase repeated every eight or ten years.
