There is no single ideal bed height for everyone. A useful bed height lets you sit on the edge with your feet resting comfortably on the floor and stand up without having to drop too low or slide down from the mattress. Fundación MAPFRE uses 45–50 cm as a general reference, while noting that the right height varies with the user.
The important measurement is therefore not only the frame height. It is the finished sleeping height, measured from the floor to the top of the mattress.
What makes up the total bed height?
bed frame + base + mattress + topper, if used = final sleeping height
Two beds with similar frames can end up at very different heights depending on the legs, base, mattress and topper.
How do you know whether a bed is the right height?
| When you sit on the edge… | What it suggests |
|---|---|
| Your feet rest flat on the floor and standing feels natural | The height is probably suitable |
| Your knees sit very high and you need a strong push to stand | The bed may be too low |
| Your feet barely reach the floor | The bed may be too high |
| Two sleepers have very different heights | Test the complete bed together |
This is more useful than chasing one universal number.
Is a higher or lower bed better?
A higher bed can make getting in and out easier and gives the bed more visual presence. A low bed creates a lighter, more minimalist look, but can be less convenient if the sleeping surface sits too close to the floor.
Neither is inherently better.
What adds height to a bed?
The frame
The structure and legs establish the starting height. The Auping bed collection includes different frame heights and configurations.
The base
The base adds height and forms part of the support system. Auping’s Adaptive Mesh provides 10,000 support points while leaving 80% open space for ventilation.
The mattress
Mattress thickness directly changes the finished bed height. A thicker mattress is not automatically a better mattress. Support, firmness, ventilation and body adaptation depend on the construction.
Compare the Auping mattress range for sleep characteristics rather than thickness alone.
The topper
If a topper is part of your normal setup, include it in the final measurement.
Published heights of Auping beds
These are the published heights of the bed model/frame. They are not necessarily the finished sleeping height, because the base and mattress are added to the complete configuration.
| Model | Published bed height | Height option |
|---|---|---|
| Auping Noble | 29 cm | +7 cm risers |
| Auping Essential | 30 cm | +7 cm risers |
| Auping Noa | 31 cm | +5 cm risers |
| Auping Original | 33 cm | +7 cm risers |
| Auping Auronde | 34.5 cm | also 41.5 and 48 cm |
Auronde shows why one “correct” height does not exist: the same design can be configured at several heights.
Why is a boxspring usually higher?
A boxspring stacks several layers vertically: upholstered base, support system, mattress and, depending on the configuration, a topper.
That usually puts the sleeping surface higher than a lightweight bed frame with a conventional base.
The Auping boxspring range is therefore worth comparing if you prefer a higher sleeping position.
Does mattress thickness determine quality?
No. Thickness helps calculate the total height of the bed, but it does not tell you whether the mattress will provide the right support.
For example, Auping Elite has a published mattress height of 24 cm. That figure is useful when calculating the complete bed height, but it does not by itself decide whether Elite is the right mattress for you.
Width, length and height are three different decisions
- width determines personal sleeping space;
- length should allow enough room for your height;
- height affects how you get into and out of bed.
For width and length, see our guide to mattress sizes in Spain. This article stays focused on the vertical dimension.
How to measure your current bed
- Measure from the floor to the top of the mattress.
- Include the topper if you use one every night.
- Sit on the edge with bare feet on the floor.
- Notice how much effort it takes to stand.
- Compare that feeling with a bed a few centimetres higher or lower.
A 5–7 cm difference can feel much more noticeable than it looks on paper.
What if you share the bed?
The bed height is shared, even when two people are very different in height.
The best solution is to test the complete system together rather than calculate a theoretical “perfect” number for each person.
Different firmness levels or sleep positions should be solved through mattress and base configuration, not by making one side of the bed higher than the other.
Common mistakes
Looking only at frame height
A 30 cm frame can result in a much higher finished bed once the base and mattress are added.
Buying a thicker mattress just to raise the bed
Thickness changes the bed height but can also change the sleep system. It should not be the only reason to choose a mattress.
Forgetting the topper
A topper adds directly to the final sleeping surface.
Choosing by appearance without testing
A very low bed can look excellent in a photograph and still feel awkward every morning.
Not measuring the complete setup before buying bedding or furniture
The final bed height also affects how the bed relates to bedside tables, the headboard and other bedroom furniture. Measure the complete setup, not only the frame.
Frequently asked questions
There is no universal height. Around 45–50 cm is often used as a general reference, but the correct height depends on the person. Sit on the edge and check that your feet reach the floor comfortably and that standing feels natural.
Measure from the floor to the top surface of the mattress. Include the topper if it is always part of the bed.
Yes. The finished height includes the frame, base, mattress and topper.
Not automatically. It may make getting up easier, but a bed that is too high can be uncomfortable for a shorter person.
It depends on the model. Published frame heights start at 29 cm for Noble, 30 cm for Essential, 31 cm for Noa, 33 cm for Original and 34.5/41.5/48 cm for Auronde. The finished sleeping height is higher once the base and mattress are included.
Usually yes, because more layers are stacked vertically.
No. Thickness affects the final bed height, while comfort depends on support, firmness, ventilation and construction.
Test the complete system
The most useful number is the height of the finished bed, not the frame alone.
Compare Auping beds, Auping mattresses and Auping boxsprings as complete systems and test how naturally you can sit down and stand up.
